For 2020-2021 the focus of the Experiential Design Studio will be a farm-to-table restaurant, a working farm and a boutique hotel in Oxford, MS. We are partnering with Dale Riser, from Beard + Riser Architects, as well as National Solutions and Shaw Contract. A key element in this year’s course is examining the hospitality industry during the COVID-19 pandemic. How does this pandemic change the way we create spaces for people in the future? How do materials respond to more stringent cleaning processes? How can designers create a safer built environment, yet consider humans need social interaction?
Our vision for this funded studio has always been that if we can remove the financial burdens that hinder the design process, and provide the students with necessary travel experiences as well as materials to experiment with, then we free up creative energy that can be used in exploring new possibilities. Generally, this funding directly impacts each student saving them up to $300 in studio materials.
This second BullMarket Campaign for the Experiential Design Studio will directly impact this years studio by providing students with the opportunity to purchase materials that can be use to research, understand and solve immediate and current issues that the COVID-19 pandemic has exposed. The Experiential Design Studio provides an opportunity for students to practice research, design and technology skills that they will take into a changing job market. Additionally, this years class will help to build a federal grant proposal for the 2021- 2022 studio, that if received, will partner the Experiential Design Studio, Sociology and Business in a collaborative grant researching the same COVID-19 related topics as it applies to the changing face of the office environment.
